HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh govt has reportedly agreed to a joint survey on the Polavaram backwaters issue. This comes after the Telangana govt raised concerns over the issue with the central water commission (CWC). The Polavaram Project Authority (PPA), led by its chairman Atul Jain and irrigation officials of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, held a meeting in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
In the meeting, it was decided to request the CWC to conduct the survey. The PPA meeting also discussed the submergence of various areas such as Bhadrachalam, Manuguru plant, and other areas due to Polavaram backwaters.

According to Telangana irrigation officials, the AP govt also agreed to the survey. It may be recalled that Telangana has been raising the issues of submergence of areas due to Polavaram backwaters, drainage congestion, sediment and silt, flooding of the Manuguru heavy water plant, the necessity of public hearings, and flood protection measures at various meetings for the past five years.
The state govt said the central water commission, PPA, and Andhra govt agreed to a joint survey at the full reservoir level. Data revealed that an extent of 954 acres faced submergence threat in Telangana, which was shared with the PPA and AP govt. However, there was no response from the neighbouring state.
The PPA was earlier in favour of a survey concerning 6-7 big streams joining below FRL and near the heavy water plant so that a clear picture would emerge. However, the Andhra govt argued that all the procedures were followed before taking up the Polavaram project and there is no need for a public hearing, officials said.
